At Green Hive, we're thrilled to announce the completion of a new outdoor social and picnic spot designed especially for people with mobility issues, whether they are ambulant or wheelchair users, to enable them to enjoy the area with their friends and families. This vibrant new space, located near Nairn harbour, offers an inclusive environment where everyone can come together, relax, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Commissioned by the Nairn Access Panel (NAP) to complement the accessible path they planned with the support of local construction businesses, the Highland Council and the Scottish charity Paths for All, the furniture was developed in close collaboration with Green Hive Workshop volunteers and NAP. The design brief focused on creating a contemporary space that not only accommodates multiple wheelchair users, but also makes it easier for people with other mobility issues to relax and enjoy the stunning sea view that was previously out of bounds to them. The size and layout were optimised to be accessible to a variety of wheelchair types while remaining inclusive for all community members.
Sustainable Design with Recycled Materials
A key feature of the picnic spot is the use of recycled plastic in the benches. These sturdy, environmentally friendly benches contribute to the comfort of the space while aligning with Green Hive’s commitment to sustainability. By repurposing plastic waste into durable seating, we’re helping reduce waste and promote greener living in our community.
Building Connections and Growing Together
In addition to being a wonderful social space, the project aligns with Green Hive’s broader goals of fostering community connections. Raised beds are being installed as part of the Nairn Food Project, allowing wheelchair users to engage in gardening activities alongside other community members. The beds were moved to the site recently, marking another step forward in creating a multi-functional space for all.
Groundwork and installation have been completed, and our Workshop team is currently working on plaques that will be added to the site. We also hope that builds like this encourage others to consider the needs of disabled people when designing their projects.
Stay tuned for more details, and we look forward to celebrating this new addition to Nairn’s public spaces with the community!
